Motor Trend: HPE650 Camaro Beats the Shelby Super Snake

mt-hpe650

The December 2009 issue of Motor Trend is out on newsstands, and the MT crew wasted no time in posting their cover story online for all to see. It’s an all-out three-way showdown featuring the Shelby’s 750HP GT500 Super Snake, a 700 hp Challenger and the Hennessey HPE650 Camaro.

Originally, the comparison called for the 725HP LS9-powered HPE700 to be pitted against the Super Snake and Challenger. But at the time of the testing (which took place a few months ago) we were in the middle of finalizing the HPE700′s build and the car wasn’t ready for testing.

However, we had another Camaro in our stable up for the task: The HPE650 and its supercharged LS3 was putting down over 600 hp to the wheels on pump gas, and had the suspension and traction to compete with the vaunted Super Snake.

And by the end of things, simply being able to “compete” wasn’t the tune Motor Trend was singing to describe how the HPE650 matched up…

“Annihilates the competition” was more like it.

Just check out the comparison video from Motor Trend and see what else they had to say about the Hennessey HPE650 Camaro:

And as an added bonus, MT also released a drag race video of the three cars tearing down the strip at once:

Motor Trend 3-Way Throwdown: HPE550 Camaro vs. Mustang GT500 vs. Challenger SRT-8

motortrend-hpe550

A few months back, Motor Trend compared the stock 2010 Camaro SS to the new 2010 Mustang GT and the 2009 Challenger R/T. Apparently, the match-up sent enthusiasts into a frenzy.

Some said they should have tested the Mustang GT500 against the crowd. Others claim Dodge’s SRT-8 should have been given a chance to show what it can do against the GT and SS.

Motor Trend’s logic, however, was sound: Keep the competitors close when it comes to how they affect the average American’s pocketbook (all three fell in the $30′s).  Besides, the GT500 wasn’t available at the time, and the Z/28 Camaro — the natural competitor for the Shelby — is still being mulled over at GM and may never see the road.

They were stuck. That is, until now.

The 2010 GT500′s are on the street, and in the absence of a supercharged Z/28 from the General, we stepped in with our own supercharged 2010 Camaro: The HPE550.

Motor Trend has posted their entire article and photo gallery online.

You can see the results here.

Here’s a hint of what the editors at Motor Trend had to say…

“There is no debating the HPE500 car is the most powerful muscle car in this group, with brutal straightline speed and a badass presence.”

“The power in this car is just fantastic and the sound is incredible.”

“Hennessey’s conversion ups the Camaro’s game considerably. Now there’s real spirit when you prod the right pedal. Your head melts to the seatback; the exhaust snaps and crackles — even pops some.”
